Abstract
Teaching engineering in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has involved numerous strategies which have been evolving over the past decades due to innovations in technology. In the recent past, the focus has not only been on promoting the mobility of Emirati students, but moreso on new and fashionable educational methodologies, e-learning and wireless networked laptop technology. The focus of this paper is in the examination of three related educational issues. Firstly, the development of strategies to facilitate the transition of students from passive to active learning. Secondly, the role of technology driven educational methodologies in promoting independent and group centered learning skills as opposed to their prior experience of highly dependent learning. Finally, the importance of outcomes evaluation and US accreditation as driving forces for increasing the mobility of UAE engineering students in a global market place as well as for the development of local industry.
