Abstract
This chapter traces the poet Frances Cornford’s early ambitions to be a painter, arguing that her study of painting provided her with a visual training which would inform her poetry’s distinctive ways of seeing. Previously unstudied and unseen manuscripts and works of art are drawn upon. Frances’s early watercolours for the Wychfield Almanacks are read alongside the poems of her half-brother Bernard Darwin; this leads to a discussion of the relationship between the verbal and the visual in Frances’s poetry, in particular in the context of her collaborations with Gwen Raverat for her second volume of poetry, *Spring Morning*.
